What is Mangekyou Sharingan?
Mangekyou Sharingan is one of the main Dojutsu eye-abilities in the Uchiha clan, followed by eternal Mangekyou Sharingan. Mainly, Mangekyou Sharingan is the next exclusive level of Sharingan which a very few Uchiha clan members seem to acquire.
While other forms of Sharingan has the chance to pop out suddenly, the Mangekyou Sharingan takes enough time to develop. Its main ability varies from user to user. Also, the appearance of MS differs from Uchiha to Uchiha. Meaning every MS user has his unique pattern to it and his ability of it.
How Does Mangekyou Sharingan Gets Activated?
Mangekyou Sharingan is the result of intense emotion, it can be sadness or anger or the admixture of both. Therefore, the pent-up anger or sadness ignites this incredible eye-power within the user. It happens mostly when a close person dies.
For example, Obito filled with uttermost emotion watches his friend Rin die. On the verge of intense sadness and anger, Obito gains Mangekyou Sharingan. However, that’s not the case every time.
Like Sasuke, he didn’t get his Mangekyou by watching his brother die. Rather after knowing the truth about him, he awakened it.
It was only possible when he learns that his brother cared for him all along.
How Did Sasuke Get Mangekyou Sharingan?

Uchiha Itachi, the elder brother of Sasuke Uchiha was a rogue ninja of the village Konohagakure. Eventually, Itachi dies because of his illness in the battle against Sasuke. After that, it was Obito who reveals to Sasuke about Itachi’s past.

Therefore, Sasuke gets to know that Itachi sacrificed his life for the welfare of the village. he was a good human being. Sasuke was shaken by the story of his brother where he learns how Itachi decided not to kill him when he was ordered to kill every single member of the Uchiha clan.
Stopping the Coup Detat
In order to stop the Uchiha coup detat, Danzo ordered Itachi to kill all the Uchiha. Itachi agreed to do that. But, in return, he wanted his younger brother to live a normal life in the village.
Itachi couldn’t gather the courage to murder his younger brother even though he killed their parents. Later Itachi joins Akatsuki to spy on the important information of Akatsuki; he helped the Leaf Village with that information.
This particular incident from the past fires up angst and sadness in Sasuke and the result is that he ends up acquiring Mangekyou Sharingan.
When Does Mangekyou Sharingan Get Activated?
It is to mention, the Mangekyou Sharingan doesn’t get activated all of a sudden. With other forms of manipulating chakra, this power works rightly.
To attain this power, the user must have awakened Sharingan, to begin with, and work through the stages. Only after that one can gain Mangekyou Sharingan.
Sasuke’s drive behind gaining this power is his anger and woe, that he is one of the reasons why Itachi dies.
Risk of having Mangekyou Sharingan
Even though the Mangekyou Sharingan is the ultimate technique and powerful, it comes at the cost of blindness!
The user has to go through unbearable pain to keep the eyes activated in Mangekyou form. It highly depends on the user’s perseverance and their way of handling pain. By using too much Mangekyou Sharingan for a long time, one can lose eyesight.
Also, the user cannot just shut this technique with closing eyes, rather it needs a lot of flow of chakra which is quite threatening for the user.
We have seen Sasuke goes near-blind because of overusing Mangekyou Sharingan. In the battle with Danzo and team 7, he almost lost his eyesight. Later, he replaced his eyes and with Itachi’s. It helps him to awaken the Eternal MS.
