Obito was a bright young ninja with a dream to become the Hokage. Despite being almost a mirror image of our main character Naruto, he turned evil during the 3rd Great Ninja War. While Kakashi was fighting dozens of Hidden Mist ninja alone, Obito rush towards his friends in order to help.
But by the time, he reached the battlefield, it was too late. In front of his eyes, he saw the girl he loved most commit suicide by the hand of his best friend. Seeing that Obito lost his dream, hope, and almost everything. And decided to bring back his lover Rin into a dream- Infinite Tsukuyomi. What he didn’t know was all of this was planned by Madara. So basically Madara made Obito turn evil.
Obito Uchiha is one of the most loved characters in the Naruto series, despite being a mastermind villain. One of the reasons was that he was being used and manipulated by Madara.
Fundamentally he was a kind and gentle boy. But the Great War and Madara’s plan made him turn his back on the village and everything. But what exactly happened then? And why did Obito turn evil? We will discuss these in detail.

Why Did Obito Turn Evil?
During the 3rd Great Ninja War, Obito and his teammate were dispatched in the war. Although they were at a very young age, the war dragged even the young ninjas into the battlefield.
Obito, Kakashi, and Rin were on Minato’s team.
In their last mission together, Minato told them that they would part ways in 2 teams. Kakashi, Rin, and Obito were in one team & Minato alone was the other team. While Minato went to confront the enemies on the battlefield, team Kakashi was on a mission to destroy the supply bridge.
Obito and Kakashi vs Hidden Rock Ninja
While Obito and Kakashi were fighting the enemy ninjas, Rin got kidnapped. Kakashi initially wanted to abandon their teammate and pursue the mission they were to complete. And Obito was fixated to rescue Rin.
On the other hand, Kakashi wanted to continue the mission. While Obito went on to rescue his comrade Rin and was about to lose the fight doing that, Kakashi came to help.
They both defeated the Hidden Rock Ninjas and rescued their teammate Rin Nohara. However, one of the enemies had other ideas. He used a rock-style Jutsu to bury them under the rock alive.
As Kakashi lost one of his eyes earlier, he had a blind spot in his vision. For that, Kakashi fell down stumbled upon a rock. Obito pulled and throw him outside and got himself crushed under a giant boulder.
Obito Gave His Sharingan To Kakashi
Kakashi and Rin left Obito after he gave his Sharingan to Kakashi, as the enemy reinforcements surrounded them. The crashing rocks buried the remaining part of the cave as Kakashi and Rin confronted the enemy.
As Obito was under the rock literally being crushed by it and had no way to survive and had no one to rescue him from that situation, everyone thought he died there. However, what no one knew was, Madara had him rescued by Zetsu.

And after Zetsu rescued him, he put a seal inside his heart in order to control Obito. Madara also staged the whole thing including Rin getting kidnapped and then turning into 3 tails Jinchuuriki.
He did all of that just to turn Obito evil. And that did happen just the way he planned. Obito snapped the moment he saw Rin get stabbed with the Raikiri in the heart. And the rest was child play.
So we can say it clearly that Obito turned evil because of Madara. Madara plotted everything bad that happened to their team. His only goal was to use Obito as his substitute in order to fulfill his plan.
Why Did Obito Betray Leaves?
Obito betrayed the hidden leaf village because 1) he wanted to create the Infinite Tsukuyomi where he can meet his love Rin again; 2) he was manipulated by Madara’s seal in his heart. Had he returned to the Hidden Leaf, he would not be able to continue the Infinite Tsukuyomi plan. In the end, he abandoned the rest of his friends, villages, and the world to achieve his goal.
Just like Obito himself once said, those who break the rules are scum, but those who abandon their comrades are worse than scum.
If only Minato could recognize Obito when he fought him during the 9 tails attack, he could have convinced him and brought him back to the Leaf village.
Why Does Obito Turn Good Again?
In short, Obito turns good again because of Naruto’s Talk no Jutsu. Naruto convinced him to believe in him and the ideology that he once hold so dear to him. That is why Obito turns good again.
Basically, Obito turned good and helped Naruto in the end because of 2 reasons:
- Naruto convinced him to do so.
- Obito had the tag in his heart removed by Kakashi.
Conclusion
Even the brightest and purest soul has a limit, a breaking point. Everyone has their limit, till which he can endure. For Obito, it was Rin’s death. And Madara found out his weakness and used it to control Obito fully.
So, the question of why did Obito turn evil is an easy thing to answer. It is because Madara plotted, and trapped Obito. And watching his lover getting killed by his best friend, Obito turned evil.
